NO MORE MAIL ART (painted interventions on "found" objects) - The only way to explain ‘No More Mail Art’ is to do something else.
About the use of real and often «found» objects as the basis for Fred Michiels' recent paintings.
In the magazine Afterall we read about this: «A found object is a natural or man-made object or fragment of an object, which is found (or bought equally often) by an artist and is used because of some intrinsic value that the artist feels . »
Michiels' new work uses the bread and butter of minimalism soaked in absolute freedom.
“I enjoy the self-deception that I feel free,” he says somewhere in one of his pamphlet-like poems.
“But we have to keep protesting! And not only verbally, but also visually ”, he continues.
"There must be an outside to give meaning to the inside." And Michiels looks for his exteriors at flea markets, auction sites or just on the street.
He is talking about things that can be lost (or that are still in danger of being lost).
These leftovers of sadness and despair are always abundant.
He has them completely under his control to exert a painterly power on them.
“I have to make a choice,” he says, “because this is the current situation in our society and it could be even worse”.
His painterly “actions” are rather daring intentions and techniques that never anticipate conclusions about his own artistic decision-making.
He himself speaks of “artistic compulsions with hand stamp and acrylic paint”.
New work by Fred Michiels will be on display at the Positions art fair in Berlin from September 10 at the booth of Eva Steynen deviation (s).
The Office of Useless Art is producing the catalog that will be presented on Sunday November 15th.
And Michiels himself is preparing his solo presentation in Eva Steynen's gallery in early 2021.

«No More Mail Art» aims for the creation of a situation in which a definition of «No More Mail Art» would make no sense.
